Perdue has lost his last shred of credibility ...

It is sad to see a governor shed his credibility like an onion, one layer at a time. But this is the sad spectacle being presented from Georgia. Especially a governor who was elected on a groundswell of public support against a well oiled political machine with a tremendous advantage in corporate funding, support from the liberal media and the power of incumbency.

What could have been a return to good government in Georgia has turned into just more of the same. The groundswell of Georgia citizens that made such an impact in last years elections have been ignored by our new Republican governor, just as much as the old Democratic governor did.

The latest controversy over the use of our troops in Iraq to bolster his declining political position, just about sheds the last layer on his credibility onion.

The governor has been reported in the Atlanta Journal Constitution with the following comment:

"The governor drew the conclusion that the flaggers' fervor had led them into dishonest territory. "When you resort to forging e-mails from soldiers in Iraq -- that crosses the line," Perdue said Friday. "I'm embarrassed for them."

So now the governor in addition to using the troops in Iraq to gain promotion for his flag, he is also using the same incident and our troops in Iraq to take a political shot at his opponents. A cheap shot and he knows he has no facts to back it up.

As reported in our last column, the controversy is between the Atlanta Journal and the Georgia Political Underground. We are not the flaggers and our involvement was to publish both the Atlanta Journal Constitution and Georgia Political Underground articles.

It was shown in the last article that the picture in question originated with at least the thought of being a flag photo op for the governor, was sent to a sister that is the President of the Perry Chamber of Commerce and then to an unknown source in the governor's office. The governor's office then sent the picture to the Atlanta Journal Constitution where it was published.

The Georgia Political Underground sent an email to the publicized public addresses and asked if it was valid. A response was received from the same email address which stated it was not real. This initiated the controversy.

Thus no flaggers were involved. The governor has nothing to back up his false claim.

Not only does he have nothing to back up his claim, but there are some serious questions about this whole process that demonstrate why the governor's credibility is being lost on this and other issues.

There was a claim that the email addresses were false. We know that is not true as we verified the addresses before ever publishing the Georgia Political Underground article to begin with. We have been very surprised that the units web-site went off the air as soon as this controversy started and is still off. When we checked the site, we were impressed with the quality of the site and noticed that they even actively solicited public feedback. But the governor, and his supporters do not seem to be concerned about the missing web-site.

With the web-site off the air, the credibility of the Georgia Political Underground was questioned since the validity of the emails could not be verified.

Interesting timing isn't it? Hmmmm, with the web-site down it would be impossible to prove that the email addesses were valid.

Hmmmm, that claim was made for a while.

But the day is saved by Google. They cache pages and guess what? The following is extracted from a cached Google page:

COMMANDER:

CPT Matthew Smith

Send CO an Email

FIRST SERGEANT:

1SG Mike Hurndon

Send 1SG an Email

Any that do not trust us to cut and paste the above, at the bottom of this article are links so that even the doubting Thomases can verify the information for themselves.

Where is the basis for the Atlanta Journal Constitution or the governor to claim that the email received from the published email address for Captain Matthew Smith is even forged? So far there has not been any!

Now for the question that shows the duplicity of the position taken by the governor:

If they truly believed that forged responses were possibly being received from these valid email addresses, why is no one concerned about their source? Why was not some effort made to contact the recipient?

It is also interesting that the governor did not claim the Georgia Political Underground forged the message. He blamed his public opponents who were not even involved. This blame came instantly! From the troop who sent the pictures, from the President of the Perry Chamber and from the Governor.

These actions simply confirm that the picture is not the real issue, whether real, staged or fake. It is the use of our troops for political purposes that is the real issue. With our troops dying at an alarming rate, it is stupid to have them line up like sitting ducks, just to help Perdue deny the people of Georgia the right to vote on our State Flag!

Lets take a few minutes and review the connection between the governor's office and the origins of the picture. This was omitted by both the governor and the Atlanta Journal Constitution, but is best described by a picture from the Atlanta Journal:

  POWER SHIFT
AT CAPITOL

Rep. Larry Walker gets a hug from Perry Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Megan Smith after he dropped out of the race for Georgia Speaker of the House.

For those who may not remember Rep. Larry Walker was Governor-elect Sonny Perdue's choice for the new Speaker of the House. As we all know Representative Larry Walker voted to deny the people of Georgia the right to vote on our State Flag.

As we all know various Chambers have publicly stated that denying the People of Georgia the right to vote on Our State Flag  was their most critical issue. They have also stated that they were successful and this was a great accomplishment with the new administration.

As we all know corporate contributions have flowed to Sonny Perdue's 2006 election campaign from corporations that contributed very little during the election. In fact based upon the campaign finance reports from the Georgia Division of Elections his 2006 campaign already has approximately $2.6 million dollars.

There is no excuse for the governor's statement just as there is no excuse for his using our troops for political purposes.

Approximately 75% of elected Republicans supported letting the People vote. It is a shame that they standby idly and let the Republican Party leadership drag their credibility down with the party leaderships' credibility. There is no excuse for their silence as their party leadership tramples the people who supported them, gets cozy with the Chamber, raises taxes and cuts deals with the politically correct. And now via a Chamber contact uses our troops in Iraq for both political gain and to take an unjustified and cheap shot at Perdue's public opposition.

What other issues does the Chamber have their eyes on? Our Water? Our Firearms?

Under this leadership maybe the GOP needs a new nickname, the Chamber Potty!

Documentation for this article:

The following are pages that we reference above and have been captured as an image. If you want to start from scratch do a Search on Google for "www.ga-lrs.org". A saved copy of that search is at:

http://www.spofga.org/ajc/GoogleSearch.htm

On this search page you will find several cached pages. These are pages where Google has saved the HTML and still tries to contact the actual site for images. Since the ga-lrs.org site has been off the air since this controversy started you will not get the images, but will get timeouts as your browser tries to access each one. You can either use the Google links (with timeouts) or our saved copies below (no timeouts).

The ga-lrs.org front page:   http://www.spofga.org/ajc/Recruiting.htm

Note that one of the email addresses used is just below the Google advertisement.

The ga-lrs.org contacts page: http://www.spofga.org/ajc/contacts.htm

The two email addesses used by the Georgia Political Underground clearly displayed. This is the source of the portion of this page above.

The ga-lrs.org public feedback page: http://www.spofga.org/ajc/feedback.htm

You will notice requests for the public to respond, provide feedback and even answer a survey. The claims that have been made that responses were not welcome are ridiculous when there is an open invitation for the public to respond. That claim was made against flaggers who were not involved is false.

The ga-lrs.org Virtual Tour with the Captain page: http://www.spofga.org/ajc/GeorgiaLRSCtour.htm

Appears to be a personal invitation for the public to communicate with the listed Captain.
