Something is fishy, is it the fish wrapper or the Governor ... Some may remember this issue from a few months ago. It was covered in the Georgia Political Underground, the AJC, this web-site and later on spread to countless other outlets. There are some facts that were inadvertently revealed in the rapid exchange that demonstrate someone is not telling the Truth. It is of course a touchy issue, the war in Iraq, the American casualties, the effect on the economy and budget are all issues on which there is considerable debate today. Very heated debate. In the overall scope this issue about the Iraqi flag may seem minor to most. But not if Iraq is being used for political gain. This all started with an email published in the Georgia Political Underground (GPU), a free electronic newsletter. Before posting the article on our web site, your Rebmaster took the time to verify the referenced email address. After establishing its validity we published both the AJC and GPU articles and have watched this issue unfold over several months. Over the next few days that sequence of events will be documented and you will be able to answer the question in the title. In the meantime, enjoy the latest Georgia Political Underground:
Gov. Sonny Perdue on Wednesday held a small, understated meeting with the four uniformed men of Company H.
These are the National Guardsmen with the 121st Infantry, based out of Fort Gillem, who took photographs of themselves and their unit with a new Georgia state flag as they toured Iraq -- and sent them to the governor in August. "Flaggers" angry with Perdue over the absence of the '56 state flag on next year's referendum accused the reservists of faking the photos, though they have since backed off the claim. Perdue accepted the wind-whipped flag from the men, all dressed in their desert khakis, and said he would invite them back when the flag could be more appropriately displayed. We expect that to be close to March 5, the date of the statewide flag vote. Capt. Ken Hutnick of Alpharetta was the man who punched the button on those e-mailed photos from Iraq. He told us something interesting -- that displays of state flags in Iraq are common. Flying the U.S. flag is discouraged -- it carries an unwanted message. More leeway is given to state flags, which carry a taste of home without riling the local population. No flaggers attended the handover of the flag. But then again, they weren't invited.
