SCV Heritage March & Flag Rally

Thursday April 1, 2004

Steve Scroggins' report  [See photos below]

The SCV Heritage March and Flag Rally was a great success! We had over 400 individuals in the march. The attending spectators and press group (TV and print) formed a very nice crowd that filled the lower rotunda area and there were many spectators on the steps and lining the rail on the upper level as well. The photos below will also help tell the story. The wind was brisk, making it diffcult to hold a flag in one hand and take photos with the other.

We assembled at the Turner Field parking lot and marched down Capitol Avenue. At one point after we crossed the Interstate overpass as we could see down one hill and up the next (near the capitol), it was a solid column of flags for a far as the eye could see. It was a beautiful sight indeed! My only regret was, being so caught up in the spectacle of the march and the speakers, I failed to get more photos of the march and the speakers. Some photos are posted on other sites and Bud Cranford's site.

SCV spokesman Dan Coleman began the program by calling for a prayer and then calling the color guard forward with the colors. The pledge of allegiance to the US flag, the Georgia flag and the salute to the Confederate flag followed.

Georgia Division Commander Jack Bridwell had a few brief remarks after which Dan Coleman introduced a number of guest speakers. CIC Ron Wilson, Lt. CIC Denne Sweeney, ANV Commander Chris Sullivan, Candidate for AOT Commander Don Shelton, SCV Field Rep and Tennessee Division Commander Skip Earle, Chaplain-in-Chief John Weaver. My apologies if I left anyone out. Dan Coleman also called on the tenor voice of Jerry Wingate who sang Dixie alone. Then we all sang Dixie together. Later Jerry led us in a rousing rendition of Bonnie Blue flag. What a beautiful sound it was! Many thanks to Dan Coleman, Tim Pilgrim and others who put together a fine program and made all the arrangements!!!

Getting closer to the capitol. At one point we were looking down a hill and up the next...it was flags for as far as the eye could see. Beautiful! We were march four abreast with about 5 yards between rows.

Chaplain-in-Chief John Weaver. As always, Pastor Weaver captivated the crowd with his oration. As he concluded, there were shouts from the gallery to draft Pastor Weaver. Pastor Weaver for Governor! Pastor Weaver for Governor! Could Georgia ever be so lucky?
